PDF flattening is the process of merging interactive form fields — text inputs, checkboxes, radio buttons, and dropdowns — into the static page content below them. The result is a PDF without editable form fields where all the values are permanently embedded. This tool flattens AcroForm form fields only; it does not flatten comments, highlights, or other annotations, and it does not process digital signatures.
When to flatten: Before printing, the flattening step ensures that form fields print exactly as they appear on screen, regardless of the PDF viewer used. Before archiving or sharing sensitive documents, flattening prevents recipients from altering or clearing form responses. Note that this tool does not convert a document to PDF/A, so it is not an archival-compliance converter.
What is preserved: Typed text in fields, checked checkboxes, and selected radio buttons are kept as static content. Only the form fields' interactivity is removed. Images, fonts, and the rest of the page content remain intact.
Privacy: This tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, a JavaScript PDF library. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server. Processing happens locally on your device.
Typical uses: Employers, schools and agencies often send fillable forms. Once you have typed your answers, flattening gives you a copy whose entries can no longer be changed by accident in a PDF viewer, which is handy before you email it, attach it to an application, or send it to a printer. It is also a common fix when a form shows blank or differently styled fields in another viewer or on a phone.
How to use it: Choose the PDF, press Flatten PDF, and download the result when the progress bar finishes. The file is saved with -flattened added to its name, so your original is untouched. If the PDF has no form fields, you get back a file that looks the same as the original.
Limits and tips: Flattening cannot be undone, so keep your original fillable copy if you may need to edit the answers later. Fill in and check every field before flattening. Because only form fields are handled, comments, highlights and drawn-on markup are left as they are, and digital signatures are not processed. If you also want a password on the file, use Protect PDF as a separate step. The 50 MB label on the upload box is a guide; very large files use more memory in your browser. If you see an error, the PDF may be damaged or encrypted in a way the library cannot open. Repair PDF may help with a damaged file.
