PDF flattening is the process of merging interactive layers — form fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, text inputs, digital signatures, and annotations — into the static page content below them. The result is a non-interactive PDF where all the values are permanently embedded.
When to flatten: Before printing, the flattening step ensures that form fields print exactly as they appear on screen, regardless of the PDF viewer used. Before archiving or sharing sensitive documents, flattening prevents recipients from altering or clearing form responses. It is also required for PDF/A archival format compliance, which does not permit interactive elements.
What is preserved: All visible content — typed text in fields, checked checkboxes, selected radio buttons, drawn signatures — is kept. Only the interactivity layer is removed. Images, fonts, and formatting remain intact.
Privacy: This tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, a WebAssembly-powered library. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server. Processing happens locally on your device.
