AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is the newest major image format on the web. Built on the AV1 video codec, it achieves compression efficiency that JPG and WebP cannot match. Switching to AVIF can cut image file sizes by 40โ€“50% compared to JPEG at equivalent quality โ€” a meaningful improvement for image-heavy websites.

AVIF vs WebP: AVIF is typically 20% smaller than WebP at the same quality. Both support transparency. WebP has broader browser support; AVIF is the better choice for audiences on modern browsers.

Browser requirements for encoding: AVIF encoding via the Canvas API requires Chrome 94+, Edge 94+, or Opera 80+. If your browser is not supported, the tool will show an error. As an alternative, use Image to WebP which has universal browser support.

Serving AVIF on your website: Use a <picture> element with AVIF as the primary source and a JPG or WebP fallback for browsers that don't yet support AVIF display.
