How to Extract Text from an Image
- 1
Upload your image or PDF
Click the upload zone or drag and drop a JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, WebP, or PDF file containing text.
- 2
Select language and extract
Choose the language of the text in your image, then click "Extract Text". The file is sent securely to our server, and processing usually takes a few seconds.
- 3
Copy or download the result
The extracted text appears in a text box. Copy it to clipboard or download it as a .txt file.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) converts images of text into machine-readable characters. It powers document scanners, receipt readers, and accessibility tools. This tool uses Tesseract OCR running on our server, so the text is not recognised in your browser.
How your file is handled: When you click Extract Text, your image or PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our server. Images are enlarged and converted to greyscale with ImageMagick to improve recognition, then read by Tesseract in the language you choose (English, Swahili, French, or Arabic). PDFs are rendered page by page first. The extracted text is returned to your browser, and your uploaded file and temporary working files are deleted from the server. Uploads are limited to 50 MB, and requests time out after about two minutes.
Getting the best results: For highest accuracy, use images scanned at 300 DPI or higher. Text should be horizontal, with strong contrast between the characters and background. Dark text on a white background gives the best outcome.
